All About our Coat of Arms

If you were a knight on horseback in the middle of a battle, you'd be wearing a suit of armour and a helmet.  How could you tell whom to follow and whom to fight against?  It was in answer to that question that knights began to paint designs on their shields.

In the beginning, each knight chose his own symbols and designs. He might choose an animal to represent strength if he were strong. As time went on, the son would keep his father's design and add his own. With a whole slew of knight, with different symbols or coats of arms, keeping track of who was whom was difficult. That became the job of the heralds.

In this activity the boys and girls designed a coat of arms about themselves. Like the knights, the boys and girls had to make their coat of arms tell something about themselves, about who they are or what they like.

Hope you enjoy!
